Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is a beautiful city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. With a history that dates back to Phoenician times, it was once a Portuguese port and later became a thriving hub of trade between Africa and Europe. It’s a place where cultures and religions have always coexisted — with a historically significant Jewish community that still preserves a fascinating museum dedicated to its heritage.
Essaouira is a wonderfully easy and enjoyable city to visit. The walled fortress is impressive, and the medina is clean, lively, and full of charm. There’s also a long beach perfect for endless walks along the sea.
It’s filled with beautiful shops selling everything from antiques and home décor to clothing and artwork — with several genuinely interesting art galleries. We definitely recommend arriving with an empty suitcase!
The climate is pleasant both in summer and winter, although it can get a little windy at times.
HOTELS
Villa de L’Ô – A beautiful, old riad from the 18th century, located near the ramparts and close to the sea. The suites with beach views are particularly charming. The property is slightly worn and could use a refresh, but it’s full of character.
Heure Bleue Palais – A truly magnificent hotel, worthy of One Thousand and One Nights. Ideally located in the heart of the medina, making everything easily accessible on foot.
RESTAURANTS
Restaurant at Heure Bleue – One of the finest dining experiences in Morocco: top-notch service, elegant decor, and outstanding cuisine.
D’Jazy Essaouira – A lively and original jazz club with a very good Moroccan restaurant inside.
La Tolerance – Simple and charming local spot. Great home-style food and very affordable prices.
Il Mare – Perhaps a little touristy, but a very good fish restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea and the waves crashing against the city walls.
SHOPS
There are plenty of wonderful craft shops of all kinds, but without a doubt our favourite is Galerie Jama — an exquisitely curated antique store, beautifully decorated, with very special pieces and rugs.
