We close this trilogy of exquisite Atlantic escapes with Cap Ferret, a place that, like Comporta and Sylt, combines wild beaches and impeccably tasteful living in perfect balance.
Cap Ferret is a peninsula located in the Bay of Arcachon, bordered on one side by the open sea and on the other by the bay itself. Like the other two destinations, it offers expansive, unspoiled beaches facing the ocean, while the inner part features carefully planned residential areas with that effortlessly chic charm so typical of France’s Atlantic coast.
Although it has preserved the authentic charm of its small fishing villages, it has also evolved into an enclave of elegant homes — both inland and by the water — with a vintage coastal feel that even evokes the Hamptons in some corners.
The Atlantic side is completely wild — just sand and pine trees. The bay side is more sheltered, teeming with marine life and perfect for safe boating.
WHAT TO DO
Cap Ferret is a tranquil place — made for slow, beautiful days. You can stroll through the village centre with its local markets and artisan boutiques, go cycling through pine forests, or spend a day at sea sailing to the Banc d’Arguin, at the mouth of the bay.
If you’re looking for dramatic sand dunes, cross the bay and head to La Dune du Pilat.
HOTELS
There are very few hotels or holiday rentals in Cap Ferret — which is part of its charm.
La Maison du Bassin: a beautiful boutique hotel with elegant décor and a fantastic restaurant.
Coté Sable: simpler, but stylish and right by the sea
RESTAURANTS
Local cuisine is the highlight here: excellent fish and seafood, and fresh produce from nearby farms and fields. And of course, a special mention for the famous Arcachon oysters.
The classic: oysters with white wine and pâté.
La Cabane Chez Hortense: the most famous and chic spot — excellent fish and seafood, the place to be.
Chez Bouland
L’Herbe
Sail Fish: a beach classic, right on the Atlantic sand, with music and a lively atmosphere — probably the most vibrant of all.
SHOPS
The local markets — always lively, with delicious food and beautiful clothing stalls.
